What are dental cavities?

Dental cavities are caused by the build-up of bacteria in your mouth, which can compromise the hard, outermost layer of your tooth. There are different stages of cavities, but ideally we like to catch them in the early stages so that they do not cause as much damage to the teeth. However, if they have progressed further, oftentimes patients will start to feel sensitivity and/or pain to sugar, or hot and cold sensations.

How does a dentist check for cavities?

In order to check for cavities, dentists will always take x-rays to see if a a cavity has formed, as well as a clinical examination to see if the tooth has any obvious chips or decay. During the tactile exams, dentists can also feel the structure of the tooth. If a tooth is "mushier," then it is likely that a cavity is forming.

What are the stages of cavities?

Cavities in the beginning stages are usually small and you aren't able to see and/or feel them because they're restricted to the outermost enamel layer. However, if you don't seek out dental exams and get routine leanings, then they often go missed and they will progress into the second layer, which is the dentin. This layer is softer, and is when you start to feel some sensitivity or discomfort in the area. If it continues to progress, it can spread into the pulp of the tooth, and that's when people will often begin feeling pain.

Is it possible for cavities to go away?

Yes! It is actually possible for cavities to go away. With that said, this is only possible in the early stages of the cavity developing. So again, if the cavity is restricted only to the enamel outer layer, and you are able to maintain great homecare with fluoridated toothpaste, you can often re-mineralize that outer layer. However if it's already reached the second layer of the tooth, then you will we need to get a filling done.

Can dental cleanings prevent cavities?

Yes, dental cleanings can prevent cavities because it's great time for dentists to be able to catch these tiny cavities early on before they become symptomatic. And with the professional dental cleanings, our hygienists are great at cleaning all the hard-to-reach spots that you may not be able to address at home with your own brushing. So if you come in for your professional cleanings, we can get all those areas and often help reduce the bacteria load in your mouth.

What should I do if I suspect a cavity?

If you suspect you have a cavity, usually it'll present itself as sensitivity to sweets, cold, or hot things, then you should definitely call your general dentist to be seen for x-rays and and an exam, and they will treat them accordingly.
